For rolling bots, a curb, rock, or stair can put a damper on any travel plans. But even a building can’t stop Sand Flea, the jumping rover from Boston Dynamics. The robot is based on an earlier project that Boston Dynamics worked on with Sandia Labs, though it doesn’t look like this version can jump while moving. Sand Flea uses an angling mechanism and a CO₂-powered piston to launch itself into the air, showing no difficulty in jumping onto a roof and falling back down to the ground. The robot was developed for use in Afghanistan, where it could send video from behind walls and inside buildings that might be dangerous for humans to enter.

RAWALPINDI – Helped by a breath-taking 59 from Flamboyant opener Imran Nazir Sialkot Stallions crush defending Super-8 Twenty20 Champions Rawalpindi Rams by 7 wickets in the last group B match here on Friday.
Nazir completed his half century in only 26 balls, with the help of five fours and four huge sixes. Shakeel Ansar 21 and Shoaib Malik 20 were the other runs contributors for Sialkot as they achieved the 122 target in only 15.3 overs. For Rawalpindi Mu Nawaz took 2 for 28 and Sohail Tanveer chipped in with 1 for 30.
Rawalpindi fail to win even a single group match losing to all opponents, thus becoming the only winless team of the event.
In the first semi-final to be played today Lahore Lions will face Karachi Dolphins, the match will start at 4:00pm, while Sialkot Stallions will be in action against Peshawar Panthers, the second semi-final will start at 8:00pm.
Earlier, Rawalpindi Rams openers once again failed to provide there team a solid start. Hammad Azam and skipper Sohail Tanveer both scored 24 runs each, while Awais Zia and Umar Amin contribute 20 each as Rams finished the innings at 121 for the loss of 9 wickets. Left arm spinner Raza Hasan grabbed 3 wickets in his last over to further dampen Rams hopes of posting a reasonable total on the board. Raza finished with 3 for 20 while Umaid Asif and Rana Navedul Hasan shared two wickets each by giving away 26 and 29 runs respectively while Shoaib Malik finished with 1 for 8.
In the first match of the day, Asad Shafiq’s superb knock of 58 guided Karachi Dolphins to a five-wicket victory over Lahore Eagles to book place in the semi-finals. Lahore Eagles, batting first, scored 148 runs for the loss of eight wickets in allotted overs. Imran Farhat hit 41 runs while skipper Taufiq Umar made 30 and Azhar Ali 23. Haris Ayaz and Roman Raees picked up two wickets each.
Needing 149 runs for victory, Karachi achieved the target in 18.1 overs for the loss of five wickets. Asad played a match-winning innings of 58 studied with six boundaries while Sheharyar Ghani made unbeaten 44 laced with five fours and one six. For Lahore Eagles, Mustafa Iqbal claimed three wickets for 26 runs while Taufiq Umar and Emmad Ali got one wicket each.

Power shortfall: US asks for political will to resolve the energy crisis

ISLAMABAD: US has asked Pakistan’s legislators to extend support and bring reforms in the energy sector to overcome the 3,800 megawatt power shortfall and with it the 10 and 12 hours daily outages, according to a report.

According to a report “Pakistan – US Energy Programme” submitted to the Ministry of Water and Power, extended political support and commitment will ensure a market-based economy. This gives the system more freedom as prices are determined by the law of supply and demand rather than by the government or a regulating body.
USAID also mentioned that 50 million Pakistanis are without access to modern energy services and the country requires $6 billion immediate investments in power generation to end the energy crisis.
A senior official of Ministry of Water and Power quoting the report said that USAID authorities informed that Pakistan’s energy sector was not supporting the country’s economy. Pakistan is spending $15 million daily on oil imports to generate power in the country.
“Pakistan is facing distribution losses of $7 million per day and the amount of subsidies in power sector stands at $4 million per day,” reveals USAID’s report adding that circular debt is increasing $6 to $8 million per day. The report study further reveals that country’s economy is facing a loss of $ 15 million to $ 20 million per day due to energy shortages.
“Governance, corporate autonomy, legal framework and institutional independence should be ensured by taking different measures through key reforms,” USAID authorities say adding that government also should introduce reforms to bring accountability and transparency and financial sufficiency. They also urged private sector participation in energy sector by opening arms to investment that will on the side increase services as well.
Power generation stands at 70% of the total generation potential in Pakistan due to issues including use of alternative fuels by power plants and poor management.
As a short term measure, USAID proposed to identify market opportunities for new customers and design energy efficiency projects. In the long-term, power projects should be initiated to bridge supply and demand gap.
USAID has also proposed to enable investment climate, public-private partnerships and innovative agreements. “Facilitate access to large funding sources of donors and enhance the energy sector reform programme,” study adds.

No indication of Pakistan lying about broader OBL support network: Mark Toner

WASHINGTON: The US State Department, reacting to news that Osama bin Laden had lived at five different locations in Pakistan over the decade leading up to his death in the May 2, 2011 raid, maintained that they never found credible evidence which points towards a Pakistan support network for the al Qaeda supremo.
State Department spokesperson Mark Toner was asked during the daily briefing on Friday whether the Pakistan government was consistently lying to the US over bin Laden. The official responded “immediately after the Abbottabad raid, we asked the Pakistani Government the question of whether there was a larger network at play here or there was some kind of network of support, I guess, for bin Ladin when he was there.  We have not received any information that indicates that there was such a network of support there.”
Pressed on whether he believed that Pakistan had lied to the US, Toner responded, “I don’t believe so … we haven’t received any indications that indicate that there was some broader network, no.”
US drones while waiting for parliamentary review
As if to send a reminder to the political forces in Islamabad to adopt a more urgent attitude towards the Parliamentary review of ties with the US, an unmanned aerial vehicle had launched missiles in Miranshah, North Waziristan, killing at least four people.
Asked about the strike, Toner said that he did not have a comment for the early Friday morning strike, but that the US continues to await results of the review.
“That’s still ongoing.  But I think that in terms of our relations, we continue to have engagement at all levels within the Pakistani Government.  And we certainly respect the review process that’s underway and we look forward to the results, and then we’ll be willing to discuss some of the issues raised by that.  But as to this incident, I don’t have any comment.”
Meanwhile, a US government official, dispelling notions that the drone strikes were on hold till Pakistan completes its review, told Reuters on Friday that, “the United States is conducting, and will continue to conduct, the counter terrorism operations it needs to protect the US and its interests.”

RPP contract cancellation: Decision to have little or no impact on power shortfall

ISLAMABAD: Though cancellation of rental power plant (RPP) contracts will have no impact on the country due to low power production at a higher cost, the government has decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court.

The decision came after the Supreme Court on Friday declared RPPs as illegal and ordered them to be shut down.
Rental power plants are producing only 120 megawatts of electricity despite the fact that the government paid Rs21.8 billion in mobilisation advance with the help of bank loans taken against assets of the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC).
“The government can easily add 120 megawatts to the national grid by bailing out independent power plants (IPPs) that are operating below capacity due to the burden of circular debt,” a government official said.
RPPs were a burden on the national exchequer that produced very expensive electricity and did nothing to provide relief to the consumers who had been facing severe energy shortages for a long time, the official said.
“The government may file a review petition after consultation with legal teams,” Water and Power Minister Syed Naveed Qamar said while talking to the media after attending an energy conference here on Friday.
Qamar said the court’s decision would not have a positive impact on future investment in the power sector, adding the economy could not survive without reducing power shortfall.
However, he expected power production to increase by 600 megawatts in the next two days.
Some government quarters termed the Supreme Court’s decision historic, saying it would not only discourage corruption in the power sector but would also force the government to invest in projects like coal and hydro resources to provide a long-term solution to the energy crisis.
A rental power plant, Karkey, was producing an average of 48 megawatts against the capacity of 231 megawatts and that too at the highest rate of Rs35-50 per unit. Among other RPPs, Gulf, which had a capacity of 62 megawatts, was generating 50 megawatts and Reshma Power with 201-megawatt capacity was producing 14 megawatts.
Experts are of the view that RPPs are not a solution to the energy crisis and the government should have arranged gas supply for power plants rather than investing in rental projects.
Four power plants with a combined capacity of over 800 megawatts have been demanding gas since June 2011 but to no avail. They either remain closed or run on expensive diesel to produce electricity, the experts say.
In addition to this, they say, higher charges of rental power plants and payment of rent have contributed to the increase in electricity tariff.

An activist of Awami National Party (ANP) was gunned down in Kanwari Colony, Manghopir Road in the limits of Peerabad Police Station here on Friday.
Police said that ANP worker, identified as Hidayatullah Mehsud, was killed at a hairdresser shop over some personal dispute.
Police said that after exchange of arguments between the deceased and his friend at a hairdresser shop, his friend, Mustaq, opened fire on Hidayatullah, killing him on the spot.Police said that incident was not a result of targeted killing.
But General Secretary ANP Sindh Bashir Jan while terming the killing as targeted said that it was conspiracy to destroy the peace of the city.
Commenting over police statement, Jan added ANP would not term the killing of its worker as 'targeted killing' if it was proved that both the men quarrelled.In another incident, a man was shot dead at Shahzad More in Orangi Town by unidentified armed men.
Ashiq S/O Muhammad Umer, 35, received bullets on his right leg, belly and other body parts.
He was a resident of Qasba Colony.
The body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.Meanwhile, a man was killed and two others injured when two rival groups clashed in Qasba Colony.
According to SHO Orangi Town, two groups exchanged fire at Qasba More that injured three persons, who were shifted to hospital.
One of the injured later died at the hospital, who was identified as Ashiq Afghani.
Ashiq Afghani was wanted in murder cases.
Following the killing riots erupted in the area, where miscreants burnt a car.
Rangers and police cordoned off the area and arrested more than a dozen suspects.

Tens of billions of habitable worlds in Milky Way

LONDON  - Astronomers hunting for rocky planets with the right temperature to support life estimate there may be tens of billions of them in our galaxy alone.
A European team said on Wednesday that about 40 percent of red dwarf stars - the most common type in the Milky Way - have a so-called “super-Earth” planet orbiting in a habitable zone that would allow water to flow on the surface. Since there are around 160 billion red dwarfs in the Milky Way, the number of worlds that are potentially warm enough and wet enough to support life is enormous. Xavier Bonfils of the Institute of Planetology and Astrophysics in Grenoble, the leader of the team, said the 40 percent figure was at the high end of what had been expected and the finding underscored the prevalence of small rocky planets. His team is the first to calculate the number of super-Earths - planets with a mass between one and 10 times the Earth - in such habitable zones, although previous research has found the Milky Way to be awash with planets.
Red dwarfs, which are faint and cool compared to the Sun, account for around 80 percent of the stars in the Milky Way.
After studying 102 of these stars in the southern skies using a European Southern Observatory telescope in Chile, Bonfils and colleagues found rocky planets were far more common than massive gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn in our solar system.
However, the rocky worlds spinning around red dwarfs are not necessarily cosy places for alien forms of life.
Because reds dwarfs are much cooler than the sun, any planets with liquid water will need to be orbiting much closer to the star than the Earth is from the Sun. That may mean they are bathed in damaging X-ray and ultraviolet radiation.
Scientists aim to take a closer look at some of the Earth-like planets as they pass in front of nearby red dwarfs, which should yield information about their atmospheres and help in the search for possible signs of life.
The research was presented in a paper to be published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

He said the country was being run on borrowing from the State Bank which is printing new notes to meet the government demand. He said this is leading to inflation and more burden on the common man. He said the labourer has no job while the poor has been pushed to the wall. The PML-N President wondered over the stand of Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani about the implementation of Supreme Court verdict. He referred to Gilani's question at a students function that if he implements court orders, he would be sent to the gallows and if he refuses,  he would be sent to jail for six months. He said how such a person can run the country if he seeks answers of the problems from young students?  He said Pakistan needed a leadership which is honest and sincere to ensure its sovereignty and integrity and remarked that one must give personal sacrifice first to put Pakistan on the path of development and prosperity. On this occasion former Minister of State Raees Muneer Ahmad announced to join the PML-N.

Following allegations by an Australian agency that Apple’s advertising deceived people into thinking its new iPad could run on all 4G networks, the company has said that it will offer refunds to any iPad buyers who believe they have been misled. The flap is the latest in a series of glitches involving the new iPad since it went on sale March 16.According to a report from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission told a federal court that Apple had not heeded warnings from the consumer watchdog that it was misleading consumers.

In court, the report said, Apple said that it never claimed that the device would work on Australia’s 4G networks, which are run by the telecom company Telstra. The iPad is compatible with what is known as “4G” in the United States — the LTE networks of Verizon and AT&T — but does not work with the LTE networks in Australia. The networks operate on different frequencies.According to a report from Fox News, Apple lawyer Paul Anastassiou said, “At no point in any promotional material for which Apple was responsible has Apple said at any time that the new Apple device is compatible” with Telstra 4G. He continued, “No such representation in our submission is conveyed by the use of the acronym 4G in the name of the device. . . . Prior to the launch of the product there was significant press pointing out that the device is not compatible with the Telstra 4G LTE network.”
In addition to granting refunds, the company agreed to post statements at points of sale to make it “plain that there is no claim made in relation to the device that it is capable of connecting with the Telstra 4G LTE network.”
Since the iPad’s debut two weeks ago, some consumers have complained about how rapidly the device drives up charges on wireless data plans and about its tendency to heat up while in use.
Other countries have also raised concerns about the way Apple is marketing the tablet’s “WiFi + 4G” model. Regulators in Sweden said that they have received several complaints about the tablet, the Wall Street Journal reported, and a lawyer at the Swedish Consumer Agency said the agency is considering an investigation. British regulators at the Advertising Standards Authority told the Daily Mail that the authority is assessing complaints about Apple’s decision to market the device in Britain, where there are no 4G networks.
The 4G LTE feature was one of the main additions to the new iPad, and although there are no compatibility issues in the United States, consumers have reported that they’ve blown through their data plans quickly in the two weeks since the iPad went on sale, The Washington Post reported.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on regulator concerns in Australia, Sweden and Britain.
