No indication of Pakistan lying about broader OBL support network: Mark Toner

WASHINGTON: The US State Department, reacting to news that Osama bin Laden had lived at five different locations in Pakistan over the decade leading up to his death in the May 2, 2011 raid, maintained that they never found credible evidence which points towards a Pakistan support network for the al Qaeda supremo.
State Department spokesperson Mark Toner was asked during the daily briefing on Friday whether the Pakistan government was consistently lying to the US over bin Laden. The official responded “immediately after the Abbottabad raid, we asked the Pakistani Government the question of whether there was a larger network at play here or there was some kind of network of support, I guess, for bin Ladin when he was there.  We have not received any information that indicates that there was such a network of support there.”
Pressed on whether he believed that Pakistan had lied to the US, Toner responded, “I don’t believe so … we haven’t received any indications that indicate that there was some broader network, no.”
US drones while waiting for parliamentary review
As if to send a reminder to the political forces in Islamabad to adopt a more urgent attitude towards the Parliamentary review of ties with the US, an unmanned aerial vehicle had launched missiles in Miranshah, North Waziristan, killing at least four people.
Asked about the strike, Toner said that he did not have a comment for the early Friday morning strike, but that the US continues to await results of the review.
“That’s still ongoing.  But I think that in terms of our relations, we continue to have engagement at all levels within the Pakistani Government.  And we certainly respect the review process that’s underway and we look forward to the results, and then we’ll be willing to discuss some of the issues raised by that.  But as to this incident, I don’t have any comment.”
Meanwhile, a US government official, dispelling notions that the drone strikes were on hold till Pakistan completes its review, told Reuters on Friday that, “the United States is conducting, and will continue to conduct, the counter terrorism operations it needs to protect the US and its interests.”

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani today expressed their desire to intensify the bilateral dialogue process for further engagements as they had an informal chat here, their second in two days at the Nuclear Security Summit.
Singh and Gilani had an "informal meeting" in Seoul, a brief statement issued by the Pakistan Prime Minister's media office said.
"Both leaders expressed their desire to intensify the dialogue process for further engagements," it said.
Singh was later seen having a longish chat with Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is set to visit India for the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit in New Delhi this week.
Last night, the Prime Minister and his Pakistani counterpart Gilani had a "meet and greet" encounter prior to a dinner hosted for dignitaries attending the summit here.
"Prime Minister said hello to Mr Gilani," Indian sources had said.
Singh and US President Barack Obama also exchanged pleasantries and hugged each other when they came face-to-face at the summit yesterday.
Obama told Singh, "Nice to see you here Mr Prime Minister."
The last Singh-Obama meeting had taken place on November 17, 2011 on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Bali, Indonesia.

ISLAMABAD:  A meeting of coalition parties at the Presidency late Saturday night endorsed the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) move to retain the top slots of the Senate – a house in which the ruling party now has an imposing presence.
A statement by presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar confirmed that the meeting backed the PPP’s move to appoint the incumbent Leader of the House Senator Nayyer Hussain Bokhari as the next Senate chairman, and Senator Sabir Baloch from Balochistan as the replacement of outgoing Senator Jan Muhammad Jamali as deputy chairman.
The official retirement of half of the Senate will take place today (March 11), following which the PPP will hold 41 of the 104 seats in the upper house of Parliament. The election of the offices of chairman and deputy chairman will be held on Monday (March 12), said the statement.
In Saturday night’s meeting, wherein the decision was confirmed, President Asif Ali Zardari urged the coalition partners to support the PPP nominees, said the statement. It added that all the allied parties attending the meeting endorsed the suggestion of the president and said that they would support the PPP nominees for these slots. The allied parties leaders also expressed the hope that both Senators Bokhari and Baloch would be elected unopposed, said the statement.
President Zardari, a few days ago, had reportedly refused to comply with demands of his allied partners for the slots.  The outgoing Senate chairman, Farooq H Naek, is likely to be appointed as minister for law.
Besides the president and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, the meeting was attended by Senator Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, Asfandyar Wali Khan, Senator Afrasiab Khattak, Senator Babar Khan Ghauri, Senator Tahir Mashhadi, Senator Mir Israrullah Zehri, Munir Khan Orakzai and Engr Shaukat Ullah.
The meeting also took stock of the latest political situation including the president’s forthcoming address of Parliament.
On Friday, President Zardari had summoned both houses of Parliament for March 17, primarily for his speech in which the president usually lays guidelines for the government’s economic and diplomatic policies.
